Scientific Founders Mark Pines, Ph.D. Dr. Pines is a Senior Scientist at the Volcani Center research institute in Rehovat, Israel. Dr. Pines specializes in connective tissue research and tissue response to injury or neoplasia, with a particular interest in the signaling role of collagen and matrix proteins. He was responsible for the discovery of the mechanism of action and clinical utility of Halofuginone. Dr. Pines has been a visiting scientist at the U.S. NIH Metabolic Disease Branch and Harvard Medical School. He was named the Volcani Institute’s “Researcher of the Year” in 1997 and is the primary or co-author of more than 90 publications. Dr. Pines has received a series of grants from the Cap Cure foundation to study the potential of Halofuginone to treat prostate cancer. Professor Israel Vlodavsky, Ph.D. Professor Vlodavsky is the head of the Tumor Biology Research Unit at the Hadassah University Hospital in Jerusalem, Israel. His main interest is in the field of cell and cancer biology, extra-cellular matrix, and vascular endothelial and smooth muscle cell physiology. Professor Vlodavsky has over 20 years of research experience and more than 200 peerreviewed publications. Arnon Nagler, M.D. Dr. Nagler is a senior physician at the Israel National Bone Marrow Transplant Center, Hadassah University Hospital, Jerusalem, Israel. He is also the head of the Hadassah Umbilical Cord Blood Bank and Transplant Program. Dr. Nagler’s main areas of clinical research are graft versus host disease, immunotherapy, and natural killer cell biology. Dr. Nagler has an M.D. from the Hebrew University Hadassah Medical School and is Board Certified in Internal Medicine and Hematology. Scientific Advisors/Clinical Investigators Bruce Dezube, M.D. Dr. Dezube is an Associate Professor of Medicine at Harvard Medical School and an Associate in Medicine at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center in Boston. He is a prominent investigator in the AIDS Malignancy Consortium of the NCI and a founder of the BIDMC AIDS oncology group. Dr. Dezube earned his M.D. at Tufts University Medical School and trained at the Harvard Medical School, Beth Israel Hospital, and the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute. Adrian Harris, BSc, DPhil, MBChB, FRCP Dr. Harris is a Professor of Clinical Oncology at the University of Oxford, as well as the Director of the Imperial Cancer Research Foundation (ICRF) Medical Oncology Unit and Director of the ICRF Molecular Oncology Laboratory. Dr. Harris is the principal investigator for Collgard’s Phase IIa bladder cancer trial. Michael Jaff, D.O. Dr. Jaff is the Director of Vascular Medicine at the Heart & Vascular Institute in Morristown, New Jersey. Prior to joining the Institute, Dr. Jaff was the Medical Director of the Center for Vascular Care at the Washington Hospital Center in Washington, D.C. A noted expert in interventional cardiology, Dr. Jaff is on the editorial board of Catheterization and Cardiovascular Intervention, The Journal of Endovascular Therapy, and The Journal of Invasive Cardiology. Dr. Jaff served as a Vascular Medicine Fellow at the Cleveland Clinic. He is an active clinical investigator and advisor to the medical technology industry. Robert S. Schwartz, M.D. Dr. Schwartz is currently Medical Director for the Minnesota Cardiovascular Research Institute and a Cardiologist with Minneapolis Heart Institute. He previously served as Director of the Center for Applied Vascular Biology and Interventions at the Mayo Foundation, as a Professor of Medicine at the Mayo Medical School, and as a Consultant to the Division of Cardiovascular Diseases and Internal Medicine at the Mayo Clinic. He co-holds numerous patents developed through Mayo Medical Ventures for medical devices used in interventional cardiology, including vascular stents, catheter guide wires, and intra-catheter perfusion pumps. Dr. Schwartz holds a Master's Degree in Electrical Engineering. He received his undergraduate degree and Doctorate of Medicine from the University of Colorado and completed his residency in internal medicine at the Mayo Graduate School of Medicine in Rochester as well as a fellowship in cardiology. He is a fellow of the American College of Cardiology, the American Heart Association Council on Clinical Cardiology, and The Society for Cardiac Angiography and Interventions. Allan L. Goldstein, Ph.D. Allan Goldstein is Professor and Chairman of the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology in the George Washington University School of Medicine and Health Sciences. In addition to a distinguished academic career encompassing research in immunology, cancer and autoimmune diseases, Dr. Goldstein is an accomplished innovator of numerous educational and scientific programs. He has also had significant experience in the private sector in all aspects of pharmaceutical product development and has been responsible for moving drugs from lab to the clinic. |
